Employment & Intern Opportunities
2011/2012
Long Island’s only professional basketball team, the New York Wizards, 2010 EBA Empire Division Champions, 2011 EBA Northern Division Champions, and 2010 & 2011 EBA Final Four participant, will be creating Employment & Intern Opportunities for both qualified candidates, High School and College Students, and others for our upcoming season.
All Wizards employment opportunities will be commission based, placing the focus on making both the employee and the employer equally successful. These opportunities will give the interested candidate a “foot in the door” of a professional sports franchise allowing for one to receive valuable experience in areas such as cold canvas sales, marketing, promotions, fundraising, instruction and education, and more…….
Wizard Intern opportunities will move away many “cookie cutter” internship programs. As a Wizard intern you will have project-focused assignments which will benefit both the student and the New York Wizards. No more printing copies, answering telephone calls, and running errands! Your schools student advisors will work closely with the Wizards administrative staff to create a rewarding and beneficial experience for your learners.
What makes a Wizards program special for the student is that they themselves can select from a list of opportunities, which allow them to utilize contacts, friends, educators, coaches, employers, etc. to help with their assignment and make them successful.
Perhaps just as important, selections exist within the proposed intern opportunities, which can allow the students to earn money in their selected area of interest.
Once the student selects from an area of interest, or potentially proposes their own, the Wizards Administrative Staff will meet with the school advisor and hopefully the student to design a program, which meets the schools academic guidelines, the student’s area of interest, and the Wizards need. This may also be done via conference call depending on availability and location. The Wizards Administrative Staff will then take the guidelines provided by the educational institution and create a program for approval. Any required documentation and/or paperwork will be agreed upon and completed by the NY Wizards
Take a look below at some of the NY Wizards proposed Intern Opportunities and see if any interest you or your school!

Intern Projects:
Securing Sponsorship – A sponsorship intern will work mostly independently utilizing a guideline proposed by the NY Wizards and his/her school. Those electing to intern in this area can often utilize current or previous business and social contacts and learn how to turn that former personal relationship into a networking opportunity and hopeful business relationship. Students would be expected to create proposals, provide weekly status reports, chart issues such as percentage of success per contact, revenue generation per employee hour, marketing analysis, and so on. Students would work closely with the Wizards to create sponsorship packages for the benefit of the customer offering positions on the web page, media guide, flyers, game day posters or banners, and so on. This particular internship provides the student an opportunity to work on a commission basis, earning 10% of all sponsorship revenue generated (this fee can be negotiated by the student, school, or New York Wizards)
Director Of Basketball Operations – The intern selecting this assignment will take on the roles and responsibilities of a professional sports teams Director of Basketball Operations (working in conjunction with the Wizards administrative staff). Normally this task consists of selecting a road or home game and caring for all the details associated with it. Although work would be mostly independent the student would normally be required to be at the home game they are directing or be available via telephone for road games (attendance at road games optional based on securing school, parental, etc. permission)
Home Game –
- Promotion and Marketing
- Arranging a doubleheader Contest Prior To Our Game
- Arranging entertainment inclusive of but not limited to Dance Team, DJ, Radio and TV presence, Bands, Cheerleaders, Car Shows, Sponsors, Vendors, special Events, etc.
- Arranging game day staff such as scorers table, ticket takers and so on
- Securing and prep of the site
- Acting as a host for the visiting team
- Securing stats after the game
- Insuring a home game sell out
- Etc.
Away Game –
- Promotion and Marketing
- Securing sponsorship or fundraising to pay for the cost of the road trip (normally as little as $650 - $2,000)
- Insuring proper travel arrangements inclusive of ground travel, directions, special needs, player communication, roster announcement, insuring contact information with opponent, etc.
Player Promotions / General Manager – Most players are participating in EBA play with the desire to play overseas, or secure a higher paying contract. The intern selecting the player promotion task will work to establish professional basketball contacts home and abroad. Students would utilize statistical data, tryouts and combines, game footage, and more for the benefit of the player. Success at this particular assignment will take on the form of:
- Securing a Wizards player a paid overseas contract
- Securing paid camp, clinic, and lesson opportunities (basketball) for our Wizards players and staff
- Securing a paid overseas exhibition tour
- Etc.
Fundraising Games / Barnstorming Games – Much like the Harlem Globetrotters and AndOne Squad the New York Wizards participate in fundraising games in the off season to benefit local youth, charitable causes, sports programs, and more. For most fundraising events the Wizards work of a 50/50 ticket split with the fundraising group, and the intern can earn 10% of the Wizards portion of the proceeds. Student interns in this task can often utilize former schools, coaches, and sports contacts to insure success. Interns in this area would be expected to:
- Secure a fundraising partner
- Arrangement of the game, opponent, facility, game day operations, marketing, assistance of the host, etc.
Media Presence – It has always been the Wizards goal to have a monopoly on the market share, in regards to publicity, media presence, and visibility, compared to all other minor league sports franchises! An intern in this area can select from an array of different tasks not limited to:
- Creation and updates on a Website which will make it among the leaders in the industry
- Securing a weekly (minimum) Wizards presence in such local media outlets such as News12, Newsday, etc….
- Creation of a Wizards Media Guide with available weekly updates, sponsor sections, etc.
- Enhancement of our already existing radio presence
- Securing 1 televised Wizards event and/or game
- Assistance of broadcasting a Wizards game Live (perhaps video streaming) for more media exposure
Students in this area may work remotely and independently for the success of the project.
Other – An Intern Program designed by the student, school, or New York Wizards
